Winning bedtime stories get TV debut

After five months of stories around dragons, fairies and David Beckham, Bertie the Pink Car has been voted the best modern day bedtime story by pre-school TV channel, Nick Jr.

Launched last September, over 8,000 entries were received, with judges including actress and mum Donna Air, children’s writer Michael Rosen and founder of NetMums, Siobhan Freegard.

Written by 3-year-old Jo Sealey and her mum Heather, and inspired by a lone pink car parked on their street, the story shows how Bertie discovers it is better to be different rather than the same as everyone else.

The winning story, along with the two runners up, William & The Wish Biscuits and Bud & The Cakes, will be turned into a short animations which will be shown on Nick Jr from Monday at 6.30pm.

They will also be aired on Nick Jr’s online broadband video player Nick Jr Video, at www.nickjr.co.uk/video.

Andy Goodhand, Nick Jr's vice president, planning & presentation director, said: “Nick Jr’s Once Upon A Bedtime competition gave everyone the chance to join in with their little ones, dig deep into their imagination and come up with their very own bedtime story. Who knows, we may even have discovered the next J K Rowling!”

The winners, Jo Sealey and her mum, also receive a special animation cell of their story, a creative writing weekend break worth £750 and £250 of book vouchers.
